Six, Seven and Eight inch faceting laps
These laps are very accurately machined on Laurie Hall's original lap making equipment. The laps have very low runout, flatness and paralellism figures that ensure smooth operation. By mounting and clamping the lap blanks in a manner identical to faceting machines during the machining process, it ensures a quality product. They compare very well against imported laps we have encountered that are bent, out of parallel, have off centre holes, vibration and issues with non flat bumps and lobes due to improper machining technique.
White metal tin alloy laps
Most other polish laps available are an attempt to substitute expensive tin with cheaper metals such as lead. These are made from 95% tin alloys with lubricant properties and are ideal for pre-polish and final polish laps. They are a generous thickness to allow future re-machining to refresh the surface if changing abrasives or if contaminated. Typical composition is 95% tin, 2% copper, 2% antimony and balance bismuth or lead.White metal refers to the bearing metal alloys used for conrod bearings in internal combustion engines. Price is $180 for the six inch, $210 for the seven inch (Suit Hall’s Xtra faceting machines) and $240 for the eight inch laps.
Copper laps
These copper laps are made from cast copper blanks with phosphorus deoxidized copper alloy. By using in house copper castings we can make thicker and softer laps than those made from rolled copper sheet which is not readily available over 10mm thickness. The “as cast” hardness of our copper laps is around half that of “rolled” plate ensuring the diamond embeds easily into the lap and allowing coarser grits below 1000 grit to be used. The generous thickness allows longer service life as it can be skimmed back to new condition when worn or changing grit size. Prices are $170 for the six inch copper lap, $195 for the seven inch copper lap (Suit Hall’s Xtra faceting machines) and $220 for the eight inch copper lap.
Red brass / Gunmetal bronze six inch laps
These cast bronze laps are softer than brass, harder than copper and provide high rates of removal, they are typically used for finer diamond grits for pre-polish service. Six inch laps are $190, seven inch are $210 and eight inch bronze are $240 each.
